The first single from our new EP ‘The Lies We Lead’, we present Technicolour Trainwreck!
A huge thanks to our great friends Kay, Alice, Viv, Jordan, Rich, Taylor, Tom and Rafial for being such wonderful actors in our song’s story.
People often comment on how they feel they’re being ‘taken for a ride’, or like their life is ‘out of control’, all of which conjures an image of a runaway train or a broken rollercoaster heading for unstable or incomplete tracks ahead.
This image was the starting point for Technicolour Trainwreck, comparing life and all of the decisions we make to a fairground ride that, once we’re aboard, doesn’t stop until it derails.
Rather than seeing this as a negative view of life, I wanted instead to pose it as something with great possibility: ultimately, there’s no avoiding the drama or the eventfulness of life, so instead we should embrace the possibilities, the extraordinary happenings, and enjoy every feeling and emotion it causes us to face.
After all, that’s what being alive is all about.
We’re actors on a stage / in a play we didn’t write
But we’ve watched a thousand times / as the mouths recycle lines
And we’ve walked this road for so long / on paths we didn’t pave
So as we lie down at the crossroads / we’re hopeful
You decide: the typhoon or the butterfly
Alight or collide
Drag yourself higher or subside
Oh / feel the drama grow
On this fairground ride that never slows
The Technicolour Trainwreck takes ahold
And reminds us we can breathe / all right
Feel your heart attack and lungs ignite
The Technicolour Trainwreck takes ahold
And reminds us we’re alive
Colour outside the lines / step on all the cracks
Let’s make this surprising
Ride the wave or let it wash you far away
Be uncertain / ill-defined / Be what you want
What you decide: the typhoon or the butterfly
Alight or collide
All aboard / aboard the train
Take your seats / don’t feel ashamed
We all long to feel the crush
As we derail / the rush the rush
