The second single taken from our EP ‘The Anchor’.
With an all-star cast of our family, friends and fans, this was such a fun video to film! Thanks to all of the following legends who took an entire Sunday out listening to Scatter on repeat until it drove us all mad:
Michael Smith, Rob Povall, Cherry Povall, Craig Sketchley, Chris West, Kate Thompson, Kris Sharry, Paul Benford, Richard Godfrey, Kirsche Povall, Katie Law, Alice Gudgeon, Chloe Green, Amy Gainer, Jacqui Begg, Sibley Allan, Ella Steward, Shauna Gladding, Emily Gardner and Jordan Mistry.
As the first song on the EP to be written, the lyrics were very much caught up in the struggles and frustrations felt by everyone in Speaking in Shadows at the time; amidst the writing process, there were many hurdles and complications in the personal lives of all of us that simply made being in the band harder and harder.
The idea of our hearts beating on irrespective of the conflicts among us was the pivotal notion that spurned the rest of the song. Musically, the song reminded us of Sweet Gemini: a radio-friendly single with plenty of catchy hooks and sections.
It gave us a steady foundation to build the EP on.
This surge beneath my bones / the tsunami that’s inside
It rages like a warzone / go dig your trenches while I
Rise above the clamour // Hear the uproar of my heart
No / we’re not holding grudges
But you’ve begrudged me from the start
I feel the lightning scorch my skin
And as I let the thunder in
I’ll be the calm before your storm
I’ll carry on
Vandalise me with your words
Swim your poison in my blood
But know my heart goes beating on
On and on and on
Disintegrating trust with your rumours and your spite
They punctuate like broken glass / I pick out your pieces while I…
Watch you starting riots
I watch you watch your promise burn
Stood atop these burning bridges / you never learn
Every complete picture / becomes a mosaic in your hands
You scatter all the colour / ‘til none. Of. It. Remains.
But in every fragment / shines a hope ablaze
A blaze you can’t control / no no
Believe me when / I say / this ends
