Our final ever music video for the opening track of our Black Rhino EP, Phantoms on Film.
Shout outs to Paperwolf Productions for making our final video something this special, and to Scarlett Kefford for being our damsel in distress – you absolutely killed it!
Ali left the band not long after the release of The Anchor, and as part of welcoming Paul into the band we decided to try writing a track early into his time with us. Phantoms on Film was the result: a blending of our existing musical style and Paul’s personal influences, veering on the heavier side of our musical spectrum.
The track was tested in front of a live audience during our latter tours of 2016 and was a mainstay thereafter.
Lyrically, the song dealt with the often-conflicting emotions of a crumbling relationship – knowing the person is poisonous but being addicted and unable to move on nonetheless. Its darker undertones would be a distinct stimulus for much of Black Rhino’s tone.
I retrace the outline / that you left on my skin
It glows like a lantern / glows like a phantom on film
Your doubts land like petals / Pacing my pathways like a child
This tip-toe silence swarms like a violence
Yet to be spilled but still designed
I’m feeling / I’m reaching / For you
In echoes of silence
This violence is swallowing me
You remap the starlight / eclipsing with whispers all I fear
Your eyes are a furnace that promise to burn this
Fading to black / we disappear
Now I see you turn your back again
In this retreat you do me wrong
But when I feel you coming round again
You’ve got me reeling / and now
The dance of your betrayal
Stampedes like a herd
Forget everything you hold dear
Forget every word
